::ephemeral utterances
THE PENTAGON'S REVENGE?

Yes, Gentle Readers, I'm back. Been busy making a living, getting lost in the day-to-day details of tending to things for money.

Just because I've been preoccupied, doesn't mean I haven't been keeping up with what is going on in the world.

Seems like the Pentagon has finally gotten the opportunity to openly 'tell it like it is'. The question is whether the people in our country will pay any attention before it is too late.

After the disasterous State of the Union Address that Bush gave in 2003 as a preamble to war, in which he unabashedly used unsupported intelligence to allude to Nigerian Yellowcake Uranium as a link between Al Qaeda and Iraq, we wondered how long the Pentagon would continue to take the heat for the lies Bush told. Seems like today, the gloves are off and Pentagon officials came right out and told the press that, contrary to Bush's and the Iraq's New Puppet, I mean President's statements that the situation was getting better, the Pentagon confirmed that the situation is actually deteriorating!

Yes, after a week of at least 2 American beheadings and countless encounters with insurgents, we all know that we are, now, officially, bogged down. There are rumblings from within the Administration that we will be getting out of Iraq sometime in 2005, in direct contradiction to Bush's stance that we 'would stay the course.'

We can even see the tide beginning to turn in the run up to the Presidential Election. Kerry is beginning to hammer Bush on Iraq, courting the female 19 to 40 demographic which is most concerned about their children serving in Iraq. Yeah, can you imagine how being in Iraq for the next 4 years will impact our country? How much farther away from Al Qaeda and other Terrorist Cells can we get? I guess you could say Bush is actually 'drawing' terrorists to us in Iraq. Maybe that's their strategy. Well, if it is, I'd say the strategy is working, for what it is worth.

Meanwhile, a front page article in the Los Angeles Times today says that Al Qaeda has changed and become more scattered and more dangerous. Why can't anyone see that this whole Iraq war was a serious diversion from the real mission? Had we 'stayed the course' when we moved into Afghanistan, maybe we could have at least gotten closer to capturing Osama bin Laden, or at least get deep enough to gain valuable intelligence that would have made a difference.

I'm no fan of Kerry, but I have to say, at this point, he's better than 4 more years of the MadMan we have in the White House today.

Been reading several interesting books lately, most specifically, John Dean's tome, 'Worse Than Watergate', which has managed to stay on the Bestseller's List in Los Angeles for double digit weeks.

I have to admit it is edifying to see so many people coming out with information about this Administration, despite its attempts at ultra-secrecy.

To add some fuel to the old saying that life is cyclical, is Bill Moyer's latest book, 'Moyers on America', in which he advances the idea that Karl Rove modeled the current president on William McKinley, while Rove modeled himself after Mark Hanna, who was responsible for manufacturing McKinley. His basis for this is the fact that both the McKinley and Bush administrations were built on and thrive on support from big business.

Once important lesson for Bush to remember... McKinley was repaid for his greed by being assassinated.

COLUMBINE AND THE DIFFERENCE 'SIX DEGREES OF SEPERATION' MAKES...

Gentle Readers, well, again, it is time for YOU to make a difference. We all talk about how bad things are in the world and how the government is usurping rights and creating a militia-mentality in America. Come on, admit it. You are probably as guilty as I am of 'griping and hiding'.

Face it, this country has been built on fear. The boogey man is out there waiting to 'get' us!

Isn't that why we love our guns?

But there IS another side of this fear based mentality and the love of guns... events like what happened at Columbine. Whether we want to admit it or not, we buy into the fear every time we watch on the news about how some innocent person was shot with an assault weapon.

Are you ready to make a small but meaningful difference - for once?

Please consider signing Tom Mauser's Petition to Renew the Assault Weapons Ban. Tom Mauser is the father of a victim of the Columbine High School Massacre, Daniel. He is upset enough to do something so that, hopefully, other people don't become innocent victims of assault weapons.

This petition is a 'little' different. After signing it, you can actually go back to the link I've given and check to see how many other people signed the petition because of your action. If you have a blog of your own, I strongly suggest that you follow the directions on the page and create a link to sign your own readers up.

I believe that one person with fervent belief can make a difference. If you care enough to publish your thoughts for the world to see, then you already are making a difference. The thing about blogging is, we generally don't know WHO reads our blogs much less how or even if what we say affects other people. I say, have a little faith and speak out against the use of assault weapons. You never know who will read it and, at the very least, think twice about the lack of wisdom in using them.

After all, if you use an assault weapon and you aren't in the military, eventually, someone will have to 'pry it from your cold, dead hands' anyway.

GETTING IT 'RIGHT' AT THE PUMP...

Have you seen the new ad that blasts the Bush Administration for rising gas prices?

If not, here's what happens:

"The commercial, unveiled at a Los Angeles news conference, shows a woman standing at a gas pump watching the spinning dials as she fills her sport utility vehicle's tank.

She looks stunned as the pump shows $3.5 million in "Oil Company Contributors to Bush Campaign," $125 billion in "Record Profits for Oil Companies," and $48 billion in "US Tax Dollars Defending Middle East Oil" instead of her $50 gas purchase.

As she replaces the gas nozzle, the price gauge reads: $0.0 for "Bush-Cheney Solutions to America's Oil Addiction." -Yahoo News

What a Hoot! Finally, a commercial that shows what all this business in Iraq is REALLY about. Can you believe, I've actually heard people say that the idea that Bush and his cronies are making any profit from oil in Iraq is nothing but a smokescreen?

Well, my friend, if you truly believe that, then you probably believe Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9-11.

Give me a break...

Reaping the Discontent We've Sown...

The article linked to above is chilling, especially since it indicates that, the Al Qaeda terrorist responsible for Nick Berg's beheading, was only able to gain a foothold in Iraq AFTER we toppled Saddam Hussein last year. If you recall, there was no love lost between the religious fanatic bin Laden and the secular Hussein - despite the stupid and wreckless notion promulgated by the Bush White House that Iraq was responsible for 9-11.

We are paying dearly for our arrogance now. Over 700 U.S. soldiers dead, more dying every day and American civilians are now slaughtered publicly and on street corners in Falujah.

We railed so vehemently against Hussein and his torture chambers and we are no better, it seems, for all our moral 'high ground'. Everyone knows that the people in the higher levels of the military and intelligence units will get off lightly or entirely on the Prisoner Abuse Scandal. I've heard people say, well, sure torture is wrong, but it was just a lot of 'play acting' and at least we didn't kill anyone!'

But, you see, we did.

We did kill Iraqi prisoners.

We murdered at least 2 prisoners and at least 10 more deaths are under investigation! Photos and videotape of the acts just haven't been made public. And, I suspect, if they do exist, we never will see them.

Why is it, that actions are ignored unless there is some photo or video record of them? Hell, the White House doesn't even want the American Public to see photos of flag draped coffins, for God's Sake!

The fall-out from the Occupation of Iraq and the Prisoner Abuse Scandal seems to be affecting Americans, FINALLY! We've been led by the nose into this ridiculous endeavor in Iraq to fund a President's group of cronies, have suffered the isolation from the rest of the world community, degrade and humiliate prisoners in their own country and then wonder why we are hated.

Wake up! This mentality of Americans are the Good Guys and everyone else are Bad Guys, is overblown! The reality of it is, we are imposing our will and values on another region of the world, when they neither asked for, or wanted our help. We suck the one resource out of the country, bomb the hell out of the rest of it and tell them what kind of government they should have, or else we won't pull out.

That's not Democracy. That's Blackmail.

*SIGH* I Miss Bill Clinton...

You know, every day something new happens in the world that makes me long for the 'good 'ol days'. Anyone who reads this blog knows that I'm not a fan of Bush, but what you may not know is... I'm not that big a fan of John Kerry either.

He isn't inspiring (rather boring, actually), or even interesting and I'd give you a dollar for every person in America who even remotely believes that he CARES about them. I certainly wouldn't want to sit across from the man at dinner or a party. To be honest, I'm not at all certain that I trust him.

The difference between him and Bush is... I KNOW we can't trust Bush! Kerry is still an 'unknown'. And the sad thing is, we have to choose between the better of two evils, the worse, by far, being Bush, in my opinion.

Regardless of where you stand on the morality scale, you have to admit, we were much better off with Bill Clinton in the White House. Here's proof. I believe that he did so much more to keep our country from harm than Bush has. All the rhetoric about fighting this War on Terror has done nothing to actually make us safer. In fact, I believe we are in more danger than ever before.

Getting back to the election, I guess the best we could ever hope for, is that Kerry had enough balls to ask Bill Clinton to be his Vice Presidential Running Mate. I mean, if Cheney can pull Bush's strings, why couldn't Clinton do the same for Kerry?

...just a question.

POST YOUR GOAL FOR OUR NATION ON MOVEON.ORG

Below is what I posted today.

The Sleeping Nation

The United States seems to be a country of Sleeping Citizens, who are more content to leave the decision-making up to the (supposedly) elected officials who ‘know more’ than average Americans are supposed to know. This is also the pretext under which National Security Agendas have grown to such a proportion that our rights have been slowly ebbing away, without making us any safer in the process.

It seems to me the greatest goal MoveOn.org has is to find ways to wake the citizenry up to their dormant power and educate them about how the abdication of this power has literally turned this country from a Democracy into an Oligarchy.

This education should start with a reminder of the definition of these words we ‘bandy’ about so easily without thought:

“DEMOCRACY: A form of government in which political power resides in all the people and is exercised by them directly, or is given to elected representatives, with each citizen sharing equally in political privilege and duty and with his right to do so protected by free elections and other guarantees.

OLIGARCHY: A form of government in which power is restricted to a few.”
-Reader’s Digest Great Encyclopedic Dictionary

Unless organizations like MoveOn.org make it a Primary Mission to explain and illustrate exactly how we are being duped by the current Administration in a ways that gain widespread and sustained attention we can look forward to:

-The continued and needless death of servicemen and women at escalated rates, in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

-Further deterioration of the World Community’s Respect for America.

-A fear-based mentality where other nations see our actions and believe the only way to deal with a potential threat is the oxymoron of ‘Pre-emptive Self-Defense’

-Continuing to believe what our President and his Administration tell us, even in the light of incontrovertible evidence to the contrary. (Can you say ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’?

-Dramatic and Devastating Terrorist attacks both here and abroad.

-Continued Bilking of the United States Economy by Oil and Energy barons within our country for profiteering purposes.

-Fewer Children graduating from elementary and secondary schools because of a sky-rocketing ‘drop-out’ rate – which makes the ‘No Child Left Behind’ numbers appear to look like progress.

-Continuation of Job Losses to the Global Market and the chance of increased inflation levels.

-The further dwindling of Free Media Pockets as companies like Clear Channel homogenize the news and information we receive on a regular basis. The richest players are the ones who dictate what news we are fed, making the 1st Amendment almost moot.

-Stolen Presidential Elections which only further weaken the already shaky resolve of voters who believe that their ‘vote doesn’t count, so why bother?’

-A society which increasingly looks more like the fundamentalist-leaning primitive groups which believe their way is the only way to salvation.

-The continued dwindling of basic human rights as well as the furtherance of the belief that ‘might ALWAYS makes RIGHT’.

-Faith-Based Initiatives which look more increasingly like ‘Fear Based Directives’.

It is hard to believe that 50% of a group of people, who absolutely believe in Democracy, as we profess to, are so BLIND to the death and destruction we have been visiting upon ourselves and populations half a world away in the name of ‘Democracy’, and the misguided belief that it somehow makes us safer.

Shame on Us!

CENSURE THE PRESIDENT, NOW!

Today Soldier's Families and Anti-War Activists called on Congress to censure the President. (Read the article here.)

I also read today that more people have died from suicide bombings in Iraq in 1 year (660) than all those killed by Palestinian suicide bombings in Isreal (474) since the year 2000! (Read more about this here.)

What does all this tell me? That, despite all the protestations of this Administration, we are creating more fertile ground for terrorism than any other entity in the world. I'm sorry, but after what happened in Spain, I believe that we won't be far behind. How could we have allowed this to occur?

We have gotten soft in our country. We forgot there was another world outside our borders, one that doesn't 'play by the rules', so to speak. We have become arrogant and monopolizing of other countries and they despise us for it.

Sure we brought capitolism to Iraq and now they can buy more than they could before, but we've also painted huge red targets on their backs. We've made them the enemy of their own countrymen. Why can't we mind our own business and stop pushing our ways on others?

If you care about this issue, please go to www.moveon.org and send a letter to your Congressperson requesting George W. Bush's censure. In my mind this is the first step toward impeachment, just in case he steals the next election like he did in 2000. Don't let him get away with this. By using fear he is taking away all our freedoms, slowly but surely.

"MEET THE PRESS" MR. PRESIDENT...

It seems the words have shifted but the tone is still the same.

I paraphrase...
'There may not be any weapons of mass destruction found in Iraq, but we were right to blow that country to 'kingdom come' god damn it - just because we say so!'

The Bush Admininstration has the obvious belief that if they say something long enough, to enough people in the press that people in this country are stupid enough to believe it is true.

Face it. We were 'bush-whacked' into getting into an unjust war. On Sunday's 'Meet the Press', Bush leveled the reason that: "Sadaam was dangerous." Hmmm, isn't there a question of degree here? Ironically, immediately after the broadcast, the New York Times Discovery Channel aired a show about the nuclear threat that North Korea poses and the fact that a 'mad man' is not only in charge of the weapons, but is worshiped by the majority of his people! Excuse me, but it has been PROVEN and stated publicly that North Korea not only Possesses WMD but they have announced their intention to sell its components on the open market to terrorists! So, tell me, who is more dangerous - blowhard Sadaam Hussein or North Korea's leader? To my knowledge, Hussein didn't have any nukes much less any aimed at us. North Korea does!

For more of the inane excuses given by our President for his reckless behaviour see Bush Offers Shifting Rationale for Iraq War

I was rather interested in this article: Gore Says Bush Betrayed the U.S. by Using 9/11 as a Reason for War in Iraq.

The book, 'The Price of Loyalty' really sheds light on this, as we all know by now that Bush was looking for ANY excuse to get into Iraq and do some damage to the guy who made a monkey out of his father's administration. The thing that seals the deal for me is the fact that this information came from classified documents within Bush II's administration. (Don't whine to me about how Paul O'Neill endangered National Security - how much more dangerous is it to 'leak information about a deep undercover intelligence agent'? Remember - the same administration intentionally did that without the slightest regard for National Security!

I suspect the opinion polls will continue to slide for this president. He is known as being untrustworthy and it is just going to get worse as time goes by. I urge you to, at the very least, go to the Primary/Caucus for your state and vote! The only real danger to our National Security is the continuation of this Police State Adminstration! Bush and his cronies threaten the very life and liberty they are supposedly defending. Let's get him out of Our White House and put someone in who is firm but fair with other countries, someone who really cares about the working class in this country and finally, someone who has more on his mind than an agenda of personal wealth and greed!
